NCAM Board hires new GM/curator

In July 2008, the North Carolina Aviation Museum Board of Directors hired Rick Bondurant, an award-winning writer, photographer and public relations professional to serve as General Manager/Curator for the NCAM.

Bondurant is  also a free-lance photojournalist who served (1985-90) as the last Chief of Community Relations at Myrtle Beach AFB in South Carolina. The base closed completely in e
arly 1991.

In addition to coordinating staffers and volunteers, this Ohio native also manages the gift shop and has extensive curatorial duties, including conserving, preserving and displaying the museum’s many historical artifacts. Bondurant is also responsible for developing the NCAM's Group Tour Program, Community Speaker Program and managing the Website.

A self-described "high-energy type who wastes no time tackling problems," Bondurant will be pursuing a master's degree in conjunction with his NCAM duties. A former Trinity Elementary School computer lab instructor, he has also served a supervisor for the Department of Commerce, hiring, training and overseeing a staff of more than 100.

For more than 23 years, Bondurant has been officially recognized for his charitable work with organizations like the Red Cross, Jason's House (an organization that provides free vacations to terminally ill children and their families), VFW, AMVETS and the American Legion. He has also earned more than three dozen writing, photography, editing and layout-design awards since 1985 from a variety of state and national organizations such as the National Federation of Press Women, N.C. Press Club and the N.C. Working Press. The United States Air Force also honored him the "John Levitow Award" in 1986.

Additionally, he's been a member of both the "Teacher of the Year" Committee for Thomasville City Schools and the Davidson County "Character Education Task Force," as well as a volunteer English-as-a-Second Language instructor for more than 1,000 immigrants since 1985.

Bondurant is married to the former Denise Lynn Routh of Baltimore, Md. The couple has been married more than 15 years and reside in Randolph County. His wife is a long-time Rural Mail Carrier for the Asheboro Post Office.
